Managing Thousand Cankers Disease in High-value Plantings of Black Walnut (Fagales: Juglandaceae) in Washington State

چکیده
Abstract The health and productivity of black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) is currently threatened by Thousand Cankers Disease (TCD), a pest complex comprised an insect vector, the twig beetle (WTB) (Pityophthorus juglandis Blackman) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), associated pathogenic fungi (Geosmithia morbida Kolařík, Freeland, Utley, Tisserat) (Hypocreales: Bionectriaceae). There urgent need for tools to manage TCD avoid catastrophic losses in high-value plantations walnut. In this case study, we evaluated efficacy IPM strategies three TCD-infested Walla Walla, WA. At beginning our average weekly captures WTB per trap varied across sites; low (~32), moderate (~111), high (>1,300). Each site received separate management tactic: 1) girdled trees alone; 2) insecticide emamectin benzoate alone or combination with fungicide propiconazole protect healthy crop superior form; 3) chemically-protected trees. Walnut populations remained at consistently levels both after were deployed. where treated, crown condition those that matched exceeded treated untreated control Our findings suggest using integrated approach has most potential reduce valuable stands TCD.

Diagnosing Thousand Cankers Disease of Walnut
Thousand cankers disease (TCD) is a newly recognized disease of various species of walnut (Juglans). Black walnut (Juglans nigra) is particularly susceptible to TCD and during the past decade it has devastated plantings of black walnut in most western states. In July 2010 thousand cankers disease was found over an extensive area around Knoxville, Tennessee, the first finding of TCD within the n...
متن کاملBlack Walnut Mortality in Colorado Caused by the Walnut Twig Beetle and Thousand Cankers Disease
Since 2001, widespread mortality of black walnut (Juglans nigra) has been reported in Colorado, USA. Affected trees initially show a yellowing and thinning of leaves in the upper crown, followed by twig and branch dieback and ultimately tree death. We report that this mortality is the result of a combination of an expanded geographic range of the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis), it...

What is thousand cankers disease of walnut? Thousand caners disease (TCD) is a newly recognized disease (2008) of certain walnut species (Juglans) caused by a fungus (Geosmithia morbida) that is vectored by a bark beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis, the “walnut twig beetle”). Thousand cankers disease has produced widespread death of walnuts in many western states during the past decade. In recent ...

Thousand cankers disease, caused by the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis Blackman) and an associated fungal pathogen (Geosmithia morbida M. Kolarík, E. Freeland, C. Utley, and N. Tisserat), threatens the health and commercial use of eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra L.), one of the most economically valuable tree species in the United States. Effective phytosanitary measures are ne...
متن کاملPhylogeography of the Walnut Twig Beetle, Pityophthorus juglandis, the Vector of Thousand Cankers Disease in North American Walnut Trees
Thousand cankers disease (TCD) of walnut trees (Juglans spp.) results from aggressive feeding in the phloem by the walnut twig beetle (WTB), Pityophthorus juglandis, accompanied by inoculation of its galleries with a pathogenic fungus, Geosmithia morbida. In 1960, WTB was only known from four U.S. counties (in Arizona, California, and New Mexico), but the species has now (2014) invaded over 115...
